All Happy Gilmore (Adam Sandler) has ever wanted is to be a professional hockey player. But he soon discovers he may actually have a talent for playing an entirely different sport: golf.
When his grandmother (Frances Bay) learns she is about to lose her home, Happy joins a
golf tournament to try and win enough money to buy it for her. With his powerful driving skills and foulmouthed attitude, Happy becomes an unlikely golf hero — much to the chagrin of the well-mannered golf professionals.

Christopher McDonald famously played the iconic, arrogant villain Shooter McGavin in the 1996 hit comedy movie Happy Gilmore. Nearly 30 years after the original, McDonald officially reprised his signature role in the sequel, Happy Gilmore 2, which premiered as a Netflix original on July 25, 2025
The Shooter McGavin Legacy
• The Audition: McDonald originally turned down the role to spend time with his family. However, after winning a golf tournament and having a 40-minute meeting with Adam Sandler where they mostly laughed, he took the part.
Famous Ad-libs: Director Dennis Dugan gave McDonald complete freedom to play. McDonald improvised several of the film’s most quoted lines. For instance, when Happy says,
“You eat pieces of shit for breakfast?” McDonald’s seething response—”No!”—was a split-second ad-lib. He also improvised the line, “You touch me one more time, I’ll burn your house down and piss on the ashes.
Pop Culture Icon: Over the decades, the finger-gun-firing Shooter McGavin became a permanent fixture in sports pop culture. McDonald has leaned heavily into the fandom. He plays in celebrity golf tournaments and is even listed under “Shooter McGavin” on his Cameo profile.
Reprising the Role in Happy Gilmore 2
McDonald spent nearly three decades asking Adam Sandler for a sequel, admitting that he “prayed” for Shooter’s return.
The sequel features the continuation of the legendary golf rivalry between Happy and Shooter, alongside a massive wave of cameos from real PGA Tour pros and celebrities like Travis Kelce and Bad Bunny. To celebrate his return during filming, Sandler and the crew gifted McDonald an official custom gold jacket.
The film Happy Gilmore has never won or been nominated for a Sports Emmy Award, as the Sports Emmys recognize achievements in sports television and journalism rather than fictional Hollywood movies
